In this post, I'll be taking a closer look at 'Vivienne', the most dramatic hat from our recent Icon Collection. Designed in collaboration with local stylist and fashion blogger Anna Mewes, each hat was designed with a particular style personality in mind and named after a British designer. With it's striking pattern, mixture of textures of pops of colour, this hat is one for ladies who like to make a strong style statement and is named for Vivienne Westwood, one of our greatest and most flamboyant designers.
The making of 'Vivienne'
This hat is made using a different technique to the 'Stella' fedora and the 'Monique' cloche. Rather than blocking the finished material, a buckram base is blocked in three separate pieces, sewn together and covered with material prior to trimming. This process is time consuming, but results in a beautiful finish with sharp, clean lines and allows for all sorts of different materials to be used.
The buckram is dampened, stretched across the wooden blocks and pinned.
Once dry, the buckram is removed from the block, trimmed to size and the top and sides of the crown sewn together and covered with material. The brim is also cut to size, wired and covered with material (in this case black leatherette) before the head fitting is sewn in.
The crown and brim are covered with material before the head-fitting is sewn in and the crown and brim sewn together.
Next the hat is trimmed with Lady Amerherst pheasant feathers and a finished with a bright orange velvet ribbon. The bright orange lining is sewn in and the hat is complete!
