I had a very enjoyable visit from two of my cousins yesterday. One of them has a wedding to attend in February and is in need of some headwear, so we had a fabulous girly afternoon trying on hats of all shapes and sizes.
After trying on a number of hats, my younger cousin Rosie declared "I am a hat person! I never thought I was". This got me thinking about the number of times I've heard people say "Oh I can't wear hats, they just don't suit me". Nonsense! "Saying you don't look good in a hat is like saying you don't look good in shoes!" (anon). It's all about finding the right hat, a hat that suits your personality, a hat that makes you stand taller and smile at yourself in the mirror.
Despite the wonderful history of millinery we have here in Britain, many people are a bit fearful of hats. Gone are the days when people wore a hat everyday; we now reserve them for only the most special of occasions, which means we find them unfamiliar, a bit alien, something to be wary of.
A crowd of women waiting for the sales to start, all wearing fabulous cloche hats, what a wonderful sight!
I believe hats are the most exciting of accessories; they offer an opportunity to express personality, complete an outfit and transform the wearer! Given the opportunity to try a variety of headwear in different shapes, sizes, styles and colours, I truly believe anyone and everyone can find something that suits them.
I have set myself a challenge....to get more people, wearing more hats, more of the time! My challenge to you is to think about hats as an everyday accessory, not just something for weddings and race days. Take the time to try some hats on, have fun with it! Be open minded and try as many different hats and fascinators as you can, quite often people are surprised by what suits them.
So, next time you reach for your woolly hat, why not consider investing in a fabulous felt cloche? It will keep you feeling warm, looking stylish and put a smile on your face!
